One of the many blessings my generation of baby boomers can experience is the success and happiness of your adult children. Sometimes the hardest lesson is learning how to keep silent when your child veers off the course you expected them to take. Most of our apprehension is rooted in fear of the unknown or other preconceived notions we have which are oft times vastly different from our child’s own perceptions and dreams.
Step back and take a deep breath is my best advice when your first inclination is to blurt out, “Are you crazy??”
My son, an attorney, dabbled in real estate for the past 10 or so years, so much so we nicknamed him, you know who, before that name literally sent shivers up my spine. After all, a real estate developer is a noble, and if the stars are aligned, lucrative endeavor. Becoming a real estate agent, in my mind, not so much. Schmoozing, full commissions, working primarily nights and weekends were just some of my apprehensions. I thought having been a full commissioned salesperson myself for more than 13 years made me an expert on the subject…..but…..I could not have been more wrong!
My son, made the decision to follow his dream without to much fanfare. His meticulous research plus his keen analytical mind served him well as he interviewed several real estate brokers until landing upon the firm he felt would be the best fit. His insatiable quest for knowledge, procedure and best practices have kept him in good stead. After barely 5 months as an agent, he’s closed more than $2,000,000 in business.
My son’s example exemplifies many of life’s lessons such as be true to yourself, follow your dreams and more importantly surround yourself with positive influencers. You can be the master of your own destiny if you just believe!
